Lionsgate Films
Online Advertising Home Entertainment

Commentary

I know some designers don't like doing online ads (a.k.a "banners ads") but I rather enjoy it.

Sure it's restrictive, and whether it's a rich media ad with streaming video or a simple Flash banner, the limitations you have to work with can seem crazy, but that's the challenge.

Trying to cram artwork, type, logos, and even video into a ridiculously small space, all while making it eye-catching enough to compel thousands of people to click it.

Very satisfying.

Scarpati Studio
Website Design

PREV IMAGE NEXT IMAGE
Commentary

I designed the Little Black Box™ website exclusively for Scarpati Studio, which is owned and operated by one of the world's most celebrated album cover photographers: John Scarpati.

John has created countless iconic images over the past three decades, and his amazing body of work includes: Album Covers, Advertising, and Art — odds are extremely good that you've seen his work without realizing whom was behind it. A visit to his website and Flickr page are highly recommended.

The concept came about through a conversation that John and I were having regarding his [then] previous website. He didn't like it, and was seeking a new direction that would better showcase his amazing images and, be easy to update without outside help. I then passed along a couple of ideas that I comped in Photoshop, he picked one, and I began the development of what would become the Little Black Box™ and Little White Box™ designs.

Fisker Dealers Of Florida
Website Design

PREV IMAGE NEXT IMAGE
Commentary

While still a niche market, the demand for luxury hybrid vehicles is quickly gaining momentum, and a rising star in that market is the very unique "KARMA" from Fisker Automotive, Inc.

Equally unique was a decision by the Fisker dealerships in Florida who wisely banded together and formed Fisker Dealers of Florida to better promote the KARMA in their home state.

Experienced in offering luxury marques like Aston Martin, Jaguar, and Land Rover, these dealers thoroughly understand their markets and decided they needed their own KARMA website.

This site now acts as a Florida-centric regional sales tool to help educate potential buyers and increase brand awareness.

Headquartered in Switzerland, ADB is one of the world's largest manufacturers of OEM and retail DVRs and set-top boxes for cable and satellite TV.

Together with creating 7 possible website redesigns, I also created the basis for a proposed ad campaign that I called "Freedom Machines", based upon their unique 6880-series HD DRVs,

and an online ad for use on the European IBC website to promote ADB's attendance at the 2009 IBC tradeshow in Amsterdam.

JVC Mobile Entertainment
Viral Video Remix / Rich Media Ads

Commentary

I've done quite a few projects for JVC Mobile Entertainment over the years, and this one was to create a series of expanding rich media ads with video to promote the El Kameleon head unit. I used video and stills supplied by filmmaker Steven Lippman, and together with image editing and the requisite Flash animation, I also needed to do an extensive remix of the video, and build-in the needed motion graphics.

Shortening any film without actually changing it is never easy, but sometimes it can be sexy. The original video is amazing (Steven shot it at 4K on a RED Camera, with SD editing by Gargantuan Films) but with a run time of nearly 3 minutes it was 2 minutes too long for either web adverts or as a television commercial, hence the remix.

The remix script called for several text inserts to reinforce the product around which the video was shot (girls? what girls?).

After watching the video a few times I decided there was no way I was going to mess up Steven's work with overlays so, aside from the opening "TURN ME ON" tag, each message exists within its own 2-second bump, hard-cut into the video at appropriate moments in the story.

I created the 3-D rotation of the head unit as both a finale to all the preceding action, and as a device to emphasize the El Kameleon's video display.

The entire remix project, including audio and 3D FX, was built in After Effects.

LOTUS Cars
Car Configurator Design and Development

PREV IMAGE NEXT IMAGE
Commentary

About a year after I completed Lotuscars.com, Lotus decided it was time to add a "Build Your Lotus" car configurator. The first step was to acquire all the basic views needed of all the current models in CGI. After much shopping for a CGI studio we hired Bend Reality to render the 4 vehicles in MAYA.

They did a fantastic job, but unfortunately the paint jobs they provided didn't match the Lotus paint chips (something we later attributed to mis-calibrated monitors at their studio). Consequently, I had to re-paint all 160 shells in Photoshop.

Once the virtual views were ready, I created backgrounds for the cars and a Flash-based viewer hooked into the page scripts. To allow the user to "build" a car in real-time as well as deliver a printable page of their configuration, required roughly 3000 lines of JavaScript, XML, and CSS.

Website Redesign and Development

Commentary

When Group Lotus hired e2amp they not only needed a new advertising agency, they desperately needed a new website for the U.S. market.

Charged with the task of rebuilding their online image, I edited, retouched, and composited backgrounds into over 200 new photos, digitally repainted 160 CGI cars (beautifully rendered in MAYA by Bend Reality), created 10 Flash galleries, an Exige S teaser video, designed over 30 web pages, created a "Build Your Lotus" car configurator with a hybrid of Flash, JavaScript, and Style Sheets, and edited and time-compressed several hours of video for use at auto shows, wrote a television commercial and designed two print ads.

My time with Lotus is now over, but during my two year involvement the work we produced was hailed as a great success by Group Lotus UK, Lotus USA, the European auto press, and Lotus owners alike.

When it was done, Lotus owners and the automotive press were blown away. "WOW!" and "It's about time!" were common reactions in online Lotus forums. Very satisfying.

Personal Photography
And Digital Imaging

PREV IMAGE NEXT IMAGE
Commentary

I don't know if I would go so far as to call my photography a "passion", but as a purely creative outlet I would go so far as to say that I do love it.

Whether attempting to realistically capture a moment in time, or as the foundation for photomanipulation, taking a photograph never fails to lend a hightened sense of anticipation for me (something that can be satisfying in its own right), but it's when the results exceed expectations that's truly exhilirating.

I suppose that's why photography is always on my mind. And when I'm not shooting I find myself thinking about images I want to create and how to create them.

The irony is when I finally attempt a work I've been dreaming of I inevitably create something entirely different from what I had imagined.
